Vinyl tray

A small tray to store a few records

We had a few vinyls stacked on the side of our record players, it didn’t look particularly pleasing and was quite annoying to browse through the pile to find the one I was looking for. So I made a tiny tray to store them.

I had a few oak floorboards that I recovered from the neighbours when they remade their flat that I used for the front and back, and one old MDF IKEA shelf that made a good base. I bought some cheap pine plinth to build the frame around.

The main issue was that the floorboards were seriously warped and had a few nails. I cut the sections with the least nails but still had to keep one inside the board. I just sawed it short and hid it at the back. For the warping, I tried to wet the board and clamp it. That didn’t help much, so I had to use Eszter’s japanese plane. Then I filled the gaps with wood filler before the final sanding. We had some Osmo polyx oil left that I could use to finish the two oak boards and we got an excess of Little Greene sage green paint for another project, which was perfect for the frame.

Lot of shavings for just two tiny boards. I oversized a bit the front of the pine frame so I had to plane more there. In the end the tray looks fine.
The tray now in use. I need to get rid of this black cable from christmas lights...
